On this episode of Real Estate Insiders Unfiltered, Nykia Wright, CEO of NAR, delivers a masterclass in organizational turnaround, detailing the newly approved strategic plan. She candidly discusses the past dysfunction, the challenge of replacing a third of the staff with “A players,” and the three pillars of the roadmap: organizational health, external pressures, and stakeholder expectations.
She shares her goal of shifting NAR from a reactionary body to a proactive partner, demonstrating accountability down to the molecular project level.
Highlights
Wright notes that the probability of a successful turnaround significantly decreases after 18 to 24 months, underscoring the urgency of the past year’s work.
To date, she has replaced nearly a third of the workforce and hired eight new executives, including a Chief Data Officer, a new General Counsel, and a leader dedicated to state and local associations.
Wright summarizes her hiring philosophy, “Leaders hire D players, D players hire F players, right? And so I hire A players.”
She describes her role as the “hardest thing” she’s ever done, but one of the “most rewarding.”
The newly approved strategic plan is based on extensive feedback, including focus groups and surveys of over 150,000 members. She was “sobered” by the initial findings, noting that members consistently demanded a rebuild of trust and transparency, feeling the old NAR was “dysfunctional, financially undisciplined, lacks transparency and wasn’t accountable.”
The strategic plan is structured around three complexity-driven areas: Industry and Economic Pressures (like low inventory and high rates), Stakeholder Expectations (like transparency and a clear value proposition), and Organizational Constraints (like governance and budgeting).
Wright emphasizes that execution is driven by a focus on “the pace.” She is managing 75 in-flight projects, each with an executive sponsor, milestones and a dedicated budget allocated with a priority.
A key initiative is the plan to create and mediate legal forums around the country, moving tough industry conversations out of private venues into an antitrust-compliant room where NAR is a collaborative partner. Her top priorities for the brokerage community are budget transformation, de-risking the portfolio and governance.
